Como poderão constatar pelo tópico, o SMF 2.0 está um passo mais próximo de sair, acabou de ser lançada a versão RC2 do SMF 2.0 para os Charter Members (do qual o P@P tem uma conta) e dentro de aproximadamente uma semana irá ficar disponível para todos os membros da comunidade!

As novidades no que respeita a funcionalidades são bastante poucas, pois o SMF 2.0 está fechado a novas funcionalidades há já algumas “pré-versões” (salvo erro, desde a Beta 4), no entanto desta vez apareceram algumas novidades nesta parte. Mas o maior destaque é mesmo para a nova theme “base” do SMF, a theme que serve de base para todas as outras, está com um visual bastante mais atractivo que a anterior e com uma maior flexibilidade no que respeita a criar novas themes! Se quiserem dar uma vista de olhos, basta visitarem o fórum como guests ou no caso de terem a theme default do fórum escolhida irão ver desde já as alterações!

Deixo-vos com uma citação do anuncio (em inglês) do SMF 2.0 RC2:

Simple Machines is proud to announce the immediate release of SMF 2.0 RC2 to Charter Members. This is the long awaited Second Release Candidate for 2.0 and is one of the last steps towards 2.0 going gold. Literally hundreds of bugs that were reported after the release of RC1 have been fixed and improvements have been made to security, stability, and performance.

As promised, 2.0 RC2 boasts our new Curve theme, which has been made the new default theme. The previous default theme has been renamed Core. Please note Classic and Babylon themes have been removed from the package and are now only available by the theme site.

Major changes since the last release:

• Inclusion of the Curve theme
• Fixed a significant number of bugs reported by Beta Testers, Charter members, and community members.
• Optimized hundreds of queries for faster performance (with new indexes, re-written queries etc, changes to column type)
• Canonical link support for better search engine indexing
• Feature: ability to have different readmes in packages for different languages
• Feature: ability to delete languages (oops! we forgot that earlier)
• Linktrees have been re-added to the lower-areas of the forum. Also, linktrees have been added to the admin, moderation and profile sections.
• Lighttpd support for Queryless urls
• Improved support for right to left languages
• Fixed OpenID
• Extra fields to for Advanced Profile fields to surround/enclose within other text, and to choose placement as icon or signature.
• Several theme improvements for better semantics and standards support.
• Moved more JS out of templates
• Wireless links to switch back to normal mode.

Acabou de ser instalado no P@P o SMF 2.0 RC1, esta versão ainda só está disponível a Charter Members (utilizadores que usam o serviço pago do SMF) como tal o P@P é um dos poucos locais que neste momento já têm a versão mais recente do SMF

Algumas novidades são imediatas, outras nem por isso, deixo-vos aqui um excerto do anuncio do SMF 2.0.

Major changes since the last release:
* Fixed a significant amount of bugs reported by Beta testers, Charter Members, and community members
* Improved security by updating session checks and building in extra checks.
* Updated the interface to assure a more intuitive navigation.
* Updated the profile interface to be more consistent with the admin and moderation navigation
* Several theme improvements so that the themes are moving toward better semantics and standards support.
* Better database layer support.

Agora só nos resta aguardar pelas próximas versões

Finalmente temos esta excelente noticia, SMF 2.0 Beta 3 foi lançado ao público! Vou instalar de seguida no meu servidor de testes mas será só aí que esta versão será instalada, como poderão ler de seguida, esta versão ainda tem alguns bugs e não é recomendável instalá-la em fóruns publicos, como tal preferimos aguardar um pouco mais e ter a confiança de instalar um produto final na nossa comunidade.

A espera que se segue tem algumas vantagens, nomeadamente o desenvolvimento de MODs que são utilizadores na nossa comunidade e não vêm no CORE do SMF (caso do GeSHi) e que são quase como requisito para podermos instalar o SMF 2.0 no nosso fórum, como tal, vamos aguardar para podermos apresentar algo realmente estável à nossa comunidade

Ao lerem a citação que se segue poderão notar que grande parte das alterações são a nível administrativo, os utilizadores irão notar algumas modificações significativas (tais como editor WYSIWYG) mas nada comparado com o painel de moderador e administrador que infelizmente poucos irão ver a funcionar na nossa comunidade.

Simple Machines is extremely proud to announce the long awaited release of the first public beta of SMF 2.0.

SMF 2.0 has now been in development for over 18 months, and in beta with our Charter Members since August last year. Feature complete, and having undergone considerable testing and bug fixing, we are now ready to put it into the hands of the public for wider testing.

Importantly, this is a beta – and the first public beta at that. We strongly recommend that you do not use this package on a production site as it will contain bugs and issues. In addition whilst we’ll do our best to support people running the beta our support team’s primary focus will remain 1.1 during this period – so please be patient if you do experience a problem. Also, we request you note the following caveats:

• All existing mods and themes are almost certain not to work until their authors have an opportunity to rewrite them.
• The upgrader will do its best to upgrade previously installed themes. However, this is not fool proof and you are likely to need to tweak old themes and update them to take full advantage of SMF 2.0 functionality.
• Language packs for 1.1 will be out of date and need updating – this might take some time.
• Users who currently integrate SMF into their site using any of the non-standard SSI functions (Such as using the db_query function) will need to change their integrations to use the new query system in 2.0. More information on this can be found here.

The changes in this release from 1.1 are immense – and we can’t list them all here. We recommend you take a look at the changelog on the download page – some of the highlights include:

• Database abstraction including support for PostgreSQL and SQLite
• Post and attachment moderation – setup through board permissions.
• Additional group management features such as group moderators and joinable and requestable groups
• Comprehensive user warning system.
• Paid subscriptions to allow people to make a payment with PayPal to get additional group access
• Personal message labeling system and new viewing options
• OpenID support – to enable users to login and register with their OpenID account
• Custom profile fields to enable admins to setup new profile fields in addition to the default
• WYSWIYG editor, to improve the user posting experience
• Ignore boards and ignore user functions – so users only see what they want to see
• Scheduled events and mail queuing systems to add additional functionality to the forum
• Admin and user logs to track who makes what changes to a user’s profile
• A moderation center to bring together all moderation functionality into one place for all people with moderation abilities

The download packages are the same as for 1.1 – simply choose the install or upgrade package depending on your requirements. If upgrading please, please remember to backup first. Please do not use this topic for support questions – use the dedicated 2.0 Support Board. Guides for installing and upgrading can be found on the Online Manual. Note that downgrading is not possible.

On a quick note to mod and theme authors, we are currently working through the templates to move towards more semantic HTML layout. Unfortunately we didn’t complete this in time for this beta, but this will make the next release, so please bear this future change in mind when looking at updating your mods and themes.

Esta noticia já tem um tempinho, mas só agora é que me lembrei de dar a conhecer a toda a comunidade o que se avizinha no futuro do nosso fórum.

Para quem não sabe, o SMF é o software que usamos na nossa comunidade e que nos possibilita ter fóruns, subfóruns, gerir threads e tudo o que estão habituados a usar. Infelizmente não é um software criado por nós, mas é sem dúvidas uma das melhores alternativas que existem por aí.

Desde Setembro de 2007 que não é lançada nenhuma versão deste software, pode parecer recente, no entanto a última alteração realmente significativa ao SMF já foi há uns tempos. Há uns bons meses que a equipa do SMF anda a desenvolver a versão 2.0 deste software, é uma versão que trás mesmo grandes alterações ao software, citando parte do comentário de um dos developers:

Version X (i.e. SMF 1.0, 2.0 etc) – A substantial rewrite of the software.
Version X.X (i.e. SMF 1.1, 1.2 etc) – Additional functionality.
Version X.X.X (i.e. SMF 1.0.9, SMF 1.1.1) – Bug fixes.

Neste momento estamos na versão 1.1.4 e o salto será para a 2.0, ou seja, o software irá ter grandes alterações mesmo, a nível de funcionalidades, desempenho e themes.

Passando directamente para o que interessa, neste momento já foram lançadas duas versões do 2.0 aos Charter Members, nenhuma delas ainda foi lançada publicamente pois os developers ainda consideram a versão 2.0 demasiado instável para ser lançada publicamente (se lerem a descrição do que é um Charter Member, percebem o motivo )

Algumas das novidades da Beta 1 são as seguintes:

• Database abstraction – with support for PostgreSQL and SQLite planned alongside that of MySQL.
• Automatic installation of packages into themes other than just the default.
• Email templates to simplify customization of forum emails.
• Moderation center including post, topic and attachment moderation – to allow approving of user content before it is made public.
• User warning system.
• Additional group functionally including group moderators and requestable/free assignable groups.
• WYSIWYG editor to provide an intuitive user interface to those users not familiar with BBC.
• Permission improvements such as group inheritance and permission profiles to further reduce the complexity of the permissions system.
• File based caching for a performance increase on all forums regardless of whether an accelerator is installed.
• Mail queuing system to stagger the sending of emails to improve performance on large forums.
• Advanced signature settings to allow the administrator of a forum to more tightly control the contents of users signatures.
• Personal messaging improvements including ability to automatically sort incoming messages and a variety of display options.
• Improved upgrade script with better timeout protection and simpler user interface.
• Custom profile fields to enable administrators to add additional member fields from the administration center.
• User configurable posts and topics per page; an improved calendar interface.
• Option to allow guests to vote in polls.

E como já saiu a Beta 2, aqui ficam as respectivas novidades

• Added support for multiple attachment folders
• Added winning birthday emails from the SMF contest
• Added option to prune logs automatically
• Added means of viewing search/replace operations when installing a mod
• Added interface to edit and add language files
• Made custom profile fields searchable on the memberlist and other improvements
• Added auto suggest control and used it on personal messages
• Added flood control and CAPTCHA to search
• Fixed repair boards to work with different database types
• Added mass topic mover to the maintenance section, and changed the maintenance area templates.
• Added admin and user logs
• Added redirection boards
• Added paid subscription feature – only currently supporting PayPal
• Added search engine tracking
• Made numerous improvements to the WYSIWYG editor

Podem encontrar mais informações nos links que referi, as funcionalidades assinaladas a verde são as que dizem respeito directamente aos utilizadores e que nos interessam particularmente, as assinaladas a laranja são funcionalidades direccionadas a moderação e administração, e são as que nos despertam mais interesse. Como podem notar, vão existir melhorias significativas no software, infelizmente esta versão foi mais direccionada a melhorias de moderação/moderação, no entanto as novidades em userlevel são bastante atractivas também

Não iremos poder actualizar a versão 2.0 no momento em que a mesma sair, antes temos de nos certificar que os MODs que precisamos são disponibilizados na nova versão, tal como as themes…, o que pode demorar algum tempo. Se houver mesmo necessidade de mudar para a versão 2.0, é provável que se percam algumas funcionalidades e themes…, mas mais vale aguardar e ver no que dá
